The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition (the Stanford-Binet or SB5) is one of the most widely used IQ tests and assesses cognitive abilities in children and adults from age 2 to 23. The type, number and difficulty of questions presented depend on the child's age and abilities. The results are scored and scaled based on the child's age. The SB5 evaluates four areas of reasoning (verbal, quantitative, abstract, and visual) as well as short-term memory.

The SB5 is used to screen for admission to certain public gifted and talented programs and private schools nationally. In New York City, the SB5 is required for admission to the publicly-funded Hunter College Elementary School and several private schools.
